Performance, Engine, And Transmission
The Altima comes standard with a 188 hp 2.5 liter four cylinder engine and a continuously variable automatic gearbox (CVT). With premium gasoline, the optional turbocharged 2.0 liter four cylinder produces up to 248 horsepower and employs a CVT. While Nissan promotes variable compression technology, only the 2.5 liter engine is available with all wheel drive. Acceleration was expected, albeit ordinary, with the base four cylinder engine and all wheel drive. The engine became noisier as we pushed harder on the gas pedal, but the four cylinder Camry we tested was just as noisy at times. The VC Turbo engine accelerates the Altima considerably.Real World MPG And Fuel Economy
The Altima doesn’t have a hybrid or an eco friendly plug in hybrid model like many of its competitors, but its two gasoline engines have impressive fuel economy ratings and much better real world outcomes. The standard 2.5 liter four cylinder engine achieves 28 mpg city and 39 mpg highway when coupled with front wheel drive. EPA ratings drop to 26 mpg city and 36 mpg highway with all wheel drive. The turbocharged 2.0 liter gets 25 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway, according to the EPA. The all wheel drive Altima got an amazing 41 mpg on our 75 mph highway fuel economy route, which was part of our lengthy testing routine; the VC Turbo variant recorded a respectable 37 mpg. The most fuel efficient (nonhybrid) Accord and Camry achieved 38 and 45 miles per gallon, respectively. Visit the EPA’s website for additional information on the Altima’s fuel efficiency.Cargo, Interior, And Comfort
The Altima’s cockpit has a basic dashboard with easy to use controls. Interior materials differ depending on trim level, but everything is a huge advance over the previous generation Altima. Our SV test car featured beautiful trimmings but harsh plastics that caught our eye. The flat bottomed steering wheel and imitation carbon fiber were overkill here, especially given the SV lacks paddle shifters and configurable driving modes. Still, the plush armrests made traveling and sitting in traffic more bearable. The front seats can fit a wide range of body shapes, although we found the lumbar support to be rather harsh. The huge rear seats were really comfy, with plenty of legroom. We were able to fit six carry-on bags in the trunk of the Altima, and 17 bags altogether with the rear seats folded. These figures mirrored those of the Camry we tested, although both fell short of the Accord’s 19 bags. Sadly, the Nissan’s back seats do not fold entirely flat and must be removed using grips in the trunk, which is difficult. The Altima features enough storage in the front seat, with small but deep door pockets and a helpful tray at the front of the center console.Warranty And Maintenance Protection
The Altima features a competitive warranty coverage that is comparable to rivals like the Accord and Camry. Sadly, Nissan does not give free planned maintenance, but Toyota does for two years or 25,000 miles.- 3 years or 36,000 miles is the length of the limited warranty.
- Powertrain warranty is valid for 5 years or 60,000 miles.
- There is no free planned maintenance.
